The story of the brownout and the Jawfish

A few days ago we lost our electricity supply for 20 hours. Not such a big deal … unless you run three tropical marine aquariums and it is -5C outside. Luckily because I run a business from home I have a handy 4kW generator. Trying to pull start that in a freezing cold pitch black blizzard was a bit of a feat. I really must get a trickle charge to the electric start battery. Bit I digress. It did start, albeit with only 10l of fuel to hand. The fuel ran out at 4:30AM. I went and fetched another 20 litres in the morning when our road was drivable. When I cranked it on again I checked the tanks. All looked OK. Tanks had dropped about 2C the sumps about 4C. RIP: BTA

Sadly the bleached BTA stopped eating and went downhill. I took prompt action and removed it because I am not prepared to dice with the death of my system. It showed all the classic signs. Mouth ragged and expanded and some splits from the sidewalls. It was always going to be a gamble. I would like to try again but this time I will get a fully healthy specimen. … Read entire article »
